The ‘Kernel’ software that is needed for the R4 SDHC is different to the R4 DS. You can download the Kernel here. Once you have downloaded it, follow the same instructions as for the R4 DS (see below).
Our R4 DS is 100% Genuine, and every R4 needs software on it before it can be used with the Nintendo DS / DS Lite.
This is a simple process which is explained below.
Any Multimedia files are stored on the Micro SD card, and this is inserted into the R4 DS.
Before you put the Micro SD card into the R4 to use on the Nintendo DS/Lite, you need software on it. This is called a Kernel.
This can be downloaded here. Here is how you install the kernel to your Micro SD Card.
1) Download and save the .rar file to your PC then extract the files using WinRAR, there will be a folder called:
“System v1.18”
Open this folder, then open the “English v1.18” folder and you will then see 2 folders and 2 files, named:
“_DS_MENU”
“ _DS_MSHL.NDS”
“moonshl” and
“_system_”
These 4 files make up the “Kernel”.
- Highlight all items, right-click on them and choose ‘copy’
- Plug your Micro SD card into the USB Card Reader, then plug this into the PC via any USB Port.
You PC should load this up automatically and a folder should come up saying ‘AutoPlay’ Then choose “Open Folders to view files” (If your PC doesn’t automatically read the USB Stick, you will have to open up your ‘My Computer’ folder, then open up ‘Removable Disk’)
- Once you are in the root directory of the Micro SD Card (USB Reader), you will see that it is empty, simply Right-Click anywhere, and choose ‘Paste’.
You will now have 4 items on your Micro SD card:
“_DS_MENU”
“ _DS_MSHL.NDS”
“moonshl” and
“_system_”
- You can then make a new folder on your Micro SD card for anything you wish to place on there. And it will now work on your Nintendo DS!
2) Unload Micro SD Card
After finishing above instructions, close any open folders on your computer, and remove the USB Reader and Micro SD Card from your PC.
3) Using the R4 - (Main Menu Operation)
Insert the Micro SD Card into the R4 DS. (The front side of Micro SD card should be matched with the back side of R4).
Insert the R4 DS into the usual games slot (DS Slot-1), turn on the power.

While the "Soft Reset” function is on, pressing "L+R+A+B+X+Y” can go back and forth to the main menu; Please do not do this while saving, as it will lead to malfunction, It is recommended to go back to main menu before you function the "Soft Reset".
If the errors occur while running files, please try to turn off the "Soft Reset".
- The top screen displays the files under the directory, 'Up/Down' key for rolling, 'Left/Right' key for flipping. The current path and amount of the total files will show on the top, the scroll bar will show the location of the current file.

There are 4 pictures at the directory "system/_system": logo.bmp ? icons.bmp ? bckgrd_1.bm and bckgrd_2.bmp. They are the background of the R4 operation interface; they can be changed to fit your style.
logo.bmp - Background of the Top Screen of R 4' s startup.

After finishing process on the pictures, copy the "_system" folder to the root directory of the CF card.
If the Skin exists in the directory of _system_ in TF/microSD, it automatically enters multi Skins mode.
The Skins in multi Skins mode can be switched manually and automatically, it is automatically switched with the Skins by months.
The method of the Skin switch is: Click “SELECT” key in main menu, it switches between twelve manual modes and one auto mode, the chart is showed as below (It automatically skips if the Skin does not exist in the directory of themes):
